What a Curl Wants

WHAT A CURL WANTS: A GUIDE TO HEALTHY, HAPPY CURLS

Curly hair needs special care—and the typical wash-rinse-dry technique just won’t cut it. For the curls of your dreams, it’s time to rethink your routine! Check out our step-by-step guide for tips on keeping curls in tip-top shape.

STEP 1: LOSE THE LATHER

Sorry to burst your bubble, but traditional foaming shampoos contain sulfates that can leave curls dry and frizzy, and silicones that can weigh curls down.

Make a clean break from suds with All About Curls No-Lather Cleanser, or just go light on the lather with Lo-Lather Cleanser. They’re free from curl no-no’s like SLS/SLES sulfates, silicones and parabens.

Tips:

Work those fingertips to really exfoliate the scalp and loosen dirt and oils.

Alternate between No-Lather and Lo-Lather Cleansers to eliminate any potential for build-up and get extra-bouncy curls.

Go a day or two between washes and simply refresh your curls without cleansing.

STEP 2: KEEP CURLS IN MINT CONDITION

Curls thrive on moisture—and the curlier the hair, the longer it takes for natural oils to travel down each strand. So don’t skimp on the conditioner! Apply All About Curls Daily Cream Conditioner generously, and use fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle.

Next, you’re going to revolutionize the way you rinse with the Squish & Squeeze method. As you start to rinse, cup your hands and collect the water and conditioner coming out of your hair. Rest your curls in the water/conditioner mix, and squish and squeeze to seal in moisture and define curls. Repeat until your hair is no longer dripping.

Tips:

Girls with tighter curls may need to add extra conditioner and water.

Try leaving a little conditioner in the hair to lock in extra moisture.

Give curls extra TLC by deep conditioning at least once a week with Divine Treatment.

STEP 3: DO IT CURLY STYLE

After washing and conditioning, simply give hair a little squeeze to remove excess water, then apply All About Curls styling products on soaking wet hair. This works because curls are in their optimal state—defined and full of moisture—when they’re wet. Applying curl-specific styling products to wet hair helps close the cuticle to eliminate frizz and add lasting definition.

Tips:

If you prefer, you can even apply our styling products in the shower.

For the best curl definition, apply gel by gliding along the surface of the hair to avoid breaking up curl clumps.

STEP 4: DRY YOUR BEST

Do a little experimenting to discover the best drying method for your hair, whether it’s using a diffuser (set to cool for best results) or simply air drying (takes a bit longer, but it’s worth it). Sometimes, a combination works best: try air drying about 70% of the way, then flip hair upside down and diffuse for more voluminous curls.

Tips:

Before drying, gently squeeze out extra moisture with a microfiber towel or old cotton t-shirt, as regular towels can be harsh on curls.

Go hands-free when using a diffuser: just aim and let the tool do the work.

STEP 5: IT’S SCRUNCH TIME!

When using styling products, especially gels like our Soft Definition Gel and High Definition Gel, scrunching your hair is key to leave curls looking as soft and loose as possible. As mentioned above, apply the gel on wet hair. Then, once hair is totally dry, use your hands to scrunch curls from tips to roots with a light, slow motion—too much pressure can cause frizz.

Tip:

If you’re using multiple styling products, add gel last.

Take the time to treat your curls right, and they’ll reward you by looking bouncy, healthy, and luscious. With these techniques and All About Curls by your side, you’ve got everything you need to do your curls proud!
