We hold ourselves to high standards and use the Global ISO Standard 16128 which defines naturally-derived as a plant or mineral derived material and water which is found in nature and has undergone limited processing. In the Better Natured® line, the percent naturally-derived varies from product to product and ranges from 86% to 99%.
It’s super-important to perform a skin allergy test 48 hours before each use of this Hair Color (or any Hair Color for that matter). To find out how, refer to the enclosed safety warnings insert inside of your Hair Color carton. Be sure to read through all safety instructions before coloring, to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.
Start with hair that’s dry, brushed, unwashed, and free of styling products.
Wear a shirt that buttons or zips up the front. You’ll thank us later.
Protect clothing and surfaces with an old towel. (Our colors are pretty, but they look best on hair.)
Depending on how long your hair is, you may want to divide it into 4 sections and secure it with plastic clips. (Or our cute Better Natured bobby pins!)
Apply barrier cream to your scalp along the hairline to help protect skin from color stains, avoiding the hair itself.
Put on your gloves—it’s go time!
Whether you chose to paint it on or bottle it up, achieving the ideal shade is all in how you mix it. Because of the expertly engineered “not-too-thick, not-too-drippy” viscosity of our formula, either one works just as well, and is just as easy—you do you.
Whichever mixing method you chose, stick to this color-to-developer ratio:
1:1 (2 fl oz/60 ml color and 2 fl oz/60 ml developer)
Follow these directions if you color every 4-8 weeks with the same (or similar) shade.
Total Time: 35-45 minutes
Color your new growth (roots) using either the bottle or brush to apply mixture onto vertical partings. Starting in the front, work your way down in rows about ¼” apart, then repeat in the back. (Unclip and re-clip each section as you go if necessary.) You should use about half the color mixture, avoiding previously colored hair.
Leave color on for 30 minutes. If covering stubborn grays or using a vibrant shade, leave on for an additional 10 minutes. Keep the good vibes going by doing something fun while you wait. (We suggest catching up on your favorite show. With snacks.)
If necessary, apply the remaining color mixture to hair lengths and ends, starting where the roots stop. Massage color down entire length of hair to the ends, section by section, using a wide-tooth comb, color brush or gloved fingers to distribute evenly. Leave on for another 5 minutes.
Rinse well with warm water until it runs clear, then wash with Better Natured® Color Care Shampoo and then condition with either Better Natured® Color Care Conditioner or Conditioning Balm. (FYI, our color leaves hair so silky-soft, you might feel like you’ve already conditioned!) Finally, use the cleansing wipe to remove any remaining color from skin.
Dry off and admire your new shade for as long as necessary. (We’ll wait.)
